Federal Ketchum Hand Grenade - Rare

SOLD

Item: Federal Ketchum Hand Grenade - Rare Excavated Example
Fusing: Percussion
Construction:
 Cast iron body.
Approximate size:
Weight: 2 pounds; Diameter: 2.4 inches. Length: 4.8 inches
Condition:
Excellent, excavated. The iron is stable with no flaking. Part of the surface is covered with a light-moderate layer of encrusted iron and sediment build-up. That portion of the grenade that is not covered is the original surface which is remarkably smooth and in excellent condition. A mold seam is visible extending the length of the grenade. Its pewter sleeve is present; however, its plunger and fins are not. The grenade has been deactivated and there are no cracks, breaks or repairs.
Recovered: Greater Richmond, VA area.
Reference:  Similar examples and additional information about Ketchum's grenade can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Thomas S. Dickey & Peter C. George, pages 493-495 & 497.
  • "Civil War Artifacts of the Western Campaigns" by Charles S. Harris, page 139.

See above pages in the additional images.

Comments: Grenades are rarely recovered and therefore excavated examples aren't typically available for purchase. Here is an opportunity to acquire one. It will be an excellent educational tool or display piece for any artillery or general relic collection.
