Federal Officer Sword Waist Belt Buckle

Item: Federal Officer Sword Waist Belt Plate
Design: Stippled background with raised eagle with large shield, clutching three arrows in its left talons and an olive branch in its right There are twelve large stars with ribbon and rays above the eagle. A wreath partially surrounds the eagle. Note the incorrect usage of a period after "E" in the national motto. 
Construction: Cast brass with integral eagle motif and tongue.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Dusty yellow-brown patina. Both belt attachment tongue and bar is present on the rear. Etched into the rear of the outer edge of the belt attachment bar is an "X" and a series of four lines. There is a slight wave in the body of the plate. The plate has no cracks, breaks or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 50 x 81 mm.

Comments: This excavated sword belt plate was acquired directly from the family of a Virginia digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
