Federal Sword Belt Buckle

Item: Federal Sword Belt Buckle
Design: A detailed eagle clutching arrows in its left talons and an olive branch in its right. Above are thirteen stars with raised rays with all partially surrounded by a wreath of laurel.
Construction: Cast brass with integral eagle motif and tongue. Applied three-piece nickel-silver wreath.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass has a very pleasing dusty light green-brown patina. Its applied three-piece nickel-silver wreath is missing which is typical for excavated examples. The belt attachment bar is present with a slight inward bend. The rear retains its belt attachment tongue. Strong body curve. There are no cracks, breaks, repairs or other bends.
Recovered: Unknown.
Approximate size: 53 x 82 mm.
Reference: A similar, but not exact example is found in:

  • "American Military Belt Plates" by O'Donnell and Campbell on page 619 as plate 377.

See above page in the additional images.

Comments: This excavated sword belt plate with its appealing green patina has a great look and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War belt plate or general relic collection.
