Item: Excavated Federal Sword Belt Plate with Keeper
Construction: Cast brass with integral eagle motif and tongue. Applied three piece nickel-silver wreath (now missing).
Condition: Very good, excavated. The plate has a nice body curve and the brass has aged into a dark green patina. The front, with its stippled background, shows a detailed eagle clutching arrows in its left talons and an olive branch in its right, along with raised rays and thirteen stars above the eagle. Its applied three piece nickel-silver wreath is missing which is typical for excavated examples. The belt attachment bar is present with a very slight inward bend. The rear is in excellent shape and retains the belt attachment tongue which is stamped with bench number "925". File marks appear along the tongue end edge of the plate and also on the tongue flat. The keeper has a similar patina and a bench number of "878". It is unknown if the keeper was recovered with the buckle but is an excellent match. There are no cracks, breaks, repairs.
Recovered: Fredericksburg, VA area.
Approximate size: 52 x 86 mm.
Comments: This solid sword belt plate with keeper will be an excellent addition to any Civil War plate or general relic collection.
