Item: Federal Sword Belt Plate - Broken Tongue Present
Construction: Cast brass with integral eagle motif and tongue. Applied three-piece nickel-silver wreath (now missing).
Condition: Good, excavated. The plate has a nice body curve, and an overall dark brown patina. The front, with its stippled background, shows a detailed eagle clutching arrows in its left talons and an olive branch in its right, along with raised rays and thirteen stars above the eagle. Its applied three-piece nickel-silver wreath is missing which is typical for excavated examples. The discoloration on the front are remnants where the wreath was applied. The belt attachment bar is present with a very slight upward bend. The rear is in good shape but its original belt attachment tongue, while present, is not attached (see comments below). There are no cracks or repairs.
Recovered: Wilderness, VA area.
Approximate size: 53 x 83 mm.
Comments: This sword belt plate was acquired directly from the digger who hunted several Civil War sites in central and northern Virginia. According to him, when the plate was recovered, its tongue was separated from the rear but fortunately not left behind. This solid sword belt plate will be an excellent addition to any Civil War plate or general relic collection.
