This excavated Federal brass sword hanger is in very good condition and was recovered from Culpeper County, VA in the area of Brandy Station. These devices hung from the leather sword belt and were designed to carry the officer's swords.
Similar examples of sword hangers, both CS and US, can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:
This Federal sword hanger measures approximately 3-inches in overall length and its strap ring is 1-5/8 inches wide. The brass now has a very pleasing dusty brown patina. Other than minor surface wear on the bottom of the hook there are no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
