Federal Sword Hanger

SOLD

This excavated Federal brass sword hanger is in excellent condition and was recovered from Culpeper County, VA in the area of Brandy Station. These devices hung from the leather sword belt and were designed to carry the officer's swords.

Similar examples of sword hangers, both CS and US, can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch on page 191, #6.
  • "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 183, #8

This Federal sword hanger measures approximately 2-1/2 inches in overall length and its strap ring is 1-5/8 inches wide. The brass now has a very pleasing rich brown patina with no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
