Federal 3-Inch Hotchkiss Shell - Brass Percussion Fuze - Patent Stamp

SOLD

Item: Fired Federal 3-Inch Hotchkiss Shell - Brass Percussion Fuze - Patent Stamp
Construction: Cast iron with lead sabot (now missing) and brass percussion fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 6.7 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 6-1/2 inches.
Rifle: 3-inch wrought iron (ordnance) rifle.
Condition: Very good, excavated. All of the iron is stable and smooth. There is old pitting and chipping primarily on one side on the base cup and where the sabot once was. These areas, and the remaining shell surfaces, were cleaned and very lightly clear coated at some point. Its brass percussion fuze is present, but is missing its lead sabot. Stamped into the base is the following Hotchkiss patent date information: "HOTCHKISS PAT. OCT. 9. 1855." Not all Hotchkiss shells have this stamp and while the stamp on this shell is difficult to see, it is indeed a stamped example. See additional images for close-up views of the stamp. The shell has been deactivated and there are no repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments:  This shell was fired but did not explode. When fired from the cannon its sabot was thrown from the shell leaving the shell nose, base cup, and percussion fuze fully intact. This 3-inch Hotchkiss shell with its brass percussion fuze will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
