Five Enfield Bullets with Box Wood Plugs

SOLD

These five excavated .577 caliber Enfield P53 Rifle Musket bullets are in very good condition and all have their box wood plugs. Four of the box wood plugs are loose and can be removed from their bullet while one is firmly secured by a small section the bullets rim. All were recovered from Virginia Civil War battlesites, campsties, and trails. According to Round Ball to Rimfire, Part Four by Dean Thomas, on page 214, regarding the Enfield P53 Rifle Musket "the Confederate Field Manual noted: Many are in the C. S. service, obtained by purchase and capture -- so called because they are made after the model of the English government rifle, manufactured at Enfield. It has three grooves, caliber .577 inches. Weight of projectile and powder -- same as rifle musket. The English bullet (known as the Pritchett bullet) has a perfectly smooth exterior. A conical wedge of box wood is inserted in the cavity of the bore, chiefly to preserve its form in being transported." These five Enfield bullets with box wood plugs will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
