Georgia State Seal Coat Button - STRUCK!

SOLD

Item: Georgia State Seal Coat Button - STRUCK!
Backmark:
Blank
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size:
24 mm.
Condition:
Fair, excavated, secure shank present. This has an overall dusty deep green patina and is in very solid shape. The state seal shows three pillars supporting an arch with letters of "CONSTITUTION" still visible. Also on the front of the button is a deep crevice that extends from side to side. There are two holes situated on the lower interior wall of the crevice that are visible in the additional images. Clearly a sharp edged device sliced into this button leaving a deep trench and, interestingly, left the rest of the button in remarkably good, solid condition. The fact that the rest of button still mostly holds its original "button" shape, indicates that when it was struck, the back of the button was likely supported by something fairly firm, but not so firm as to cause the button to fold over on itself. The damage appears as "period" damage as the patina on the interior of the crevice matches the rest of the button. There is no bright brass showing and no repairs have been made to this button.
Recovered: February 1990 along Old Creighton Road, Hanover County, VA.
Comments:
Included in the additional images is an image of a saber blade edge carefully suspended just inside the crevice to demonstrate the possibility of a saber strike. Also, included in the additional images of the button is an image of the digger's index card indicating, in most cases, the button's identification, assessment of condition, recovery date & location and other general information. In cases where there are discrepancies between the digger's description and Virginia Relic's description, Virginia Relic's description shall be deemed correct. This button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
