Item: Excavated Georgia State Seal Coat Button
Backmark:
"HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / N Y" dm
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. The button is solid and has a pleasing chocolate brown patina. The letters of "Constitution" are visible on the arch and the letters of "Wisdom", "Justice", and "Moderation"  are visible on the pillars. Covering the backmark on the rear is a light layer of epoxy with remnants of the old brown card stock that the button was once attached to. It has no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs. 
Recovered: Fredericksburg, VA
Comments: The face of this button shows the Georgia state seal which was adopted by their state legislature in 1799.  It was acquired directly from the digger's family and will be an excellent display piece to add to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
