Item: CS 2.9 inch Read Long Model Half Shell - Experimental Fuze Plug from Tredeger's Test Range
Construction: Cast iron with wrought iron ring sabot.
Fuzing: Unusual brass fuze plug with Girardey percussion fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 4 pounds. Diameter: 2.92 inches. Length: 9-1/8 inches.
Condition: Good, excavated. The shell was professionally sawed in half to expose its inner materials. Visible in the cross-section is a brass fuze plug which holds an early version of an experimental version of a Confederate Girardey percussion fuze. Also visible is the powder cavity and sabot. See labeled cross-section in the additional images to see these features. The exterior side of the shell has cracks in its surface iron and, while a thin layer of clear coat has been applied as a preservative, it should be handled with care.
Recovered: Tredeger's test range, Richmond, VA
Comments: This half shell is an unusual and rare example from Peter George's personal collection. Mr. George, co-authored "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" and is one of the leading experts on artillery of the American Civil War. This half shell will not only be an excellent display piece and educational tool, but also a fine addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
