SOLD

Item: Hat Wreath
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass.
Condition: Fair, excavated. This incomplete hat wreath, with its dusty green patina, was recovered in two pieces. There are no repairs.
Approximate size: 2-1/2 x 1-7/8 inch.
Recovered: Sailor's Creek, VA area.
Reference: Several types of hat wreaths are pictured in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 102.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War 1861 - 1865 Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips, page 100.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard R. Crouch on page 157.
  • "American Military Headgear Insignia" by J. Duncan Campbell and Michael J. O'Donnell on pages 298 & 299.

See above pages in additional images.

Comments:  These delicate wreaths are rarely recovered intact primarily due to their fragile construction. This example was acquired directly from the digger's family. A glass-top display case, measuring 3-1/4 x 4-1/4 x 3/4-inch and pictured in the additional images, will be included. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War insignia, uniform, or general relic collection.
