Backmark: "STEELE & JOHNSON."
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Fair, excavated, shank missing. While the button was pushed nearly flat, it does retain much of its front features such as Virtus standing over Tyranny with sword down, along with "CADET" over Virtus and the letters "H M A" under Tyranny. There is ample gilt remaining highlighting the letters, Virtus and Tyranny.
Comments: These buttons, even in this condition, are difficult to recover. Warren K. Tice states in his reference book "Uniform buttons of the United States 1776-1865", "Manufactured by Steele & Johnson around 1860, it is an exceptionally rare specimen in either dug or non-dug conditions."
Recovered: Baltimore County, MD
Reference: Tice: VAS276 Albert: SU 170
