Brass Tag of 2nd Lt. J.H. Humphreys - Greenville, SC - Freemason

SOLD

This excavated brass tag is stamped "J. H. HUMPHREYS / GREENVILLE, S. C." with a Masonic symbol in the center. It was recovered in Orange County, VA along with other Confederate Civil War relics and acquired directly from the digger. The tag likely adorned a personal item belonging to Humphreys. The digger's research indicated that Humphreys was a 2nd Lt. in Company H, 16 South Carolina Infantry (Greenville Regiment) and also a private in companies H, I, & A, 3rd (Palmetto) Battalion South Carolina Light Artillery. Several of his research documents are included in the additional images of this tag and all of the documents will accompany it. The Masonic symbol, of a square and compass with the letter "G" in the center, represents the soldier's membership in the Freemason fraternal organization. Soldiers who were Freemasons were found fighting on both sides of the war and more about Freemasons and the symbol can be found by clicking the preceding link. The tag measures approximately 7/8 x 15/16 inch, is cripsply stamped, and has a pleasing brown patina with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War soldier personal item or general relic collection.
