According to the records of the former collector/digger, who was gifted this 7-3/4-inch-long iron spike, it was recovered from the James River above Ft. Darling, in Chesterfield County, VA. Crudely constructed, its head measures approximately 3/4-inch and it weighs approximately 4-ounces. The iron is stable, and its surface was very lightly clear coated many years ago. It was included in an extensive excavated Civil War relic collection acquired directly from the family of the digger. The digger hunted the Richmond, VA area and surrounding counties for several decades. He responsibly maintained handwritten detailed records of his finds. Included in the additional images is the digger's index card for this relic indicating, in most cases, the relic's identification, assessment of condition, recovery date & location, and other general information. An image of this index card will be included along with the description and image of the relic. Also included will be the paper towel with notation which it has been wrapped in. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War water recovered relic or general relic collection.
