Comments: The button front shows two figures shaking hands surrounded by the motto "UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL". According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, "this design and motto became popular in the border States, reflecting the hope of many citizens that peace and reason would prevail over discord and war." Though considered a Confederate State, Kentucky never officially seceded. This Kentucky state seal coat button will be an excellent example to add to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
