Item: Maine State Seal Coat Button
Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY" dm
Construction: High convex, three-piece.
Design: Device shows Maine arms with motto "DIRIGO" above and "Maine" below on a lined field. Star at top.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated, shank present. Toned brass patina. No pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.

Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice on page 304, regarding this particular classification (ME200) of buttons:
"Maine approved the device in 1856 for use by the improved Volunteer Militia. Scovill produced the first examples in 1857, and they had become standard for Maine troops by 1861."
This button will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
