Backmark: "SCOVILL. MF'G CO, / WATERBURY" dm
Design: Maryland state coat of arms in the center, with "MARYLAND" below, and the motto "CRECITE ET MULTIPLICIMINI" on a ribbon. (For more on Vermont's coat of arms see the Additional Information section below.)
Construction: High convex, three-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure shank present. The front of the button is covered with gilt. The backmark is visible. This button has no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.

Comments: This button was acquired directly from the family of the local Virginia digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection. 

Additional Information: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, on page 310 regarding the state seal found on the front of the button:

"In 1854 the state restored the use of a modified Calvert seal of the Lords Baltimore. The reverse, or arms, of this seal was struck on Civil War Maryland buttons. It shows a shield inscribed with quartered arms of Calvert and Crossland families surmounted by an eagle. Six vertical bands intersected by a diagonal stripe make up the Calvert portion. A Greek cross with arms ending in trefoils represents the Crossland arms. Written on a scroll under the shield is the Latin motto Crescite et Mulitplicimini, meaning "increase and multiply". A farmer supports one side of the shield, while a fisherman props up the other."
