This Confederate McEvoy fuse igniter was recovered during the 1970's from the Petersburg, VA area. These igniters were invented by C. A. McEvoy, of Richmond, VA., to ensure ignition of the paper time fuses in rifled shells. The igniter is constructed of a lead weight that contains a serrated looped wire. Amazingly, the loop still has a small portion of its iron pin which is melded into the center of the loop. Missing is its wood cylinder and the majority of the iron pin that the igniter would have been suspended from, as these parts did not withstand a century of being buried. I have included information, images, and diagrams of other examples of McEvoy fuse igniters in the additional images from the following reference books:
"Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Thomas S. Dickey and Peter C. George on page 449 and also in the 1990 edition on page 255.
"Artillery Fuses of the Civil War" by Charles H. Jones, on page 63
"Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 35 as item 5.
This rare Confederate McEvoy fuse igniter measures .90 inches in overall length and .30 inches in diameter. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
