Federal Model 1840 NCO Sword - Excavated

SOLD

This Federal model 1840 NCO (non-commissioned officer) sword was acquired directly from the digger who recovered it decades ago in the area of Cumberland Landing, New Kent Co., VA. For an excavated example, it is in very good, solid condition. Its straight iron blade is solid and fully intact with the exception of blade edge chipping and, moderate rust build-up and degradation. Its brass handle, pommel and guard are present, undamaged, and now have a very attractive even olive-green patina. Any markings once present on the blade's ricasso, are no longer visible due to ground action. All components of the sword are tight, there is no looseness. The sword's overall length measures approximately 38-3/4 inches. Its handle and guard is approximately 6-1/2 inches in length, and its blade is 32-1/6 inches in length. A similar example of this sword is found in "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 81, item 1. A scan of this page is included in the additional images. The sword offered here will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War edged weapon, campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
