Non-Commissioned Officer Eagle Plate with Arrow Hooks

SOLD

Item: Non-Commissioned Officer Eagle Plate with Brass Arrow Hooks
Use: Non-Commissioned Officer or NCO eagle plates were worn on an infantry NCO's shoulder belt to support his Model 1840 sword. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction:

Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and three arrow style brass hooks.
Design:
A raised eagle clutching arrows in its right talons and an olive branch in its left talons.
Condition:
Excellent, non-excavated. Its brass face has a very pleasing even mellow yellow brass patina. The rim has light bending and a few dents but nothing major. The rear has a full complement of solder with all three iron attachment hooks solidly intact. The plate has no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Approximate diameter: 64 mm.
Reference: Similar examples of this type NCO eagle plate are pictured in:

  • "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, on page 288, as plate 459.
  • "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874", by Sydney C. Kerksis on page 52.

See above pages in additional images.

Comments: NCO eagle plates are very rarely encountered with arrow hooks and according to "American Military Belt Plates" on page 288 the "brass hooks are clearly positioned for a shoulder belt." The face of this plate is simply outstanding with its smooth even patina coupled with its well-defined eagle. This NCO eagle plate with arrow hooks will be an excellent addition to any Civil War plate or general relic collection.
