Item: North Carolina State Seal Cuff Button - Rare Unusual 15.5 mm Size
Backmark: Blank with raised five-pointed star in depressed channel.
Design: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, “The North Carolina seal and coat of arms depict the female figures of "Liberty" and "Plenty". The former holds a liberty pole with her right hand, and a scroll inscribed "CONSTITUTION" with her left. "Plenty" grasps a cornucopia in her left hand and wheat with her right." In an arc at the rim above the seal is "NORTH CAROLINA."
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 15.5 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. Brown patina with ample gilt on both front and back. The state seal is nicely highlighted. Other than a slight push to the rear, there are no other pushes, cracks, breaks or repairs.
Recovered: Fredericksburg, VA.

Comments: North Carolina state seal cuff buttons are rarely recovered, and this example will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
