Confederate Time Fuze Adaptor - Gang Mold Scar

SOLD

This excavated Confederate copper time fuse adaptor is in very good condition and was for use in cylindrical artillery projectiles. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the period scar on one side of the head is a result of this fuse adaptor having been cast in a "gang" mold and subsequently being broken apart from the other fuse adaptors. See the additional images to see this scar. This adaptor is constructed of copper which now has a very pleasing dusty green patina. The two spanner holes visible on the top of the adaptor were used to screw it into the shell. A paper time fuse, of varying burn times, would have been inserted into the larger center hole. The head of this adaptor measures approximately 1.20 inches in diameter and its length measures approximately 1.82 inches. The threads, which measure the standard 12 threads per inch, are in near perfect condition and would likely screw into a shell with equally good threads.  This fuze adaptor has no cracks, bends, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
