Pattern 1853 Enfield Ramrod

This excavated full length pattern 1853 Enfield ramrod, measuring approximately 39 inches in length, is in very good condition. The iron is in good solid, stable shape with moderate pitting and rust build-up. The surface may have been clear coated at some point. Its upper coned end is in good solid shape while the lower end is missing the threads. There is a very mild bend beginning approximately 11 inches from the lower end. It was acquired directly from the family of the digger, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter and according to its tag was recovered Chancellorsville February 15, 1969. Interestingly, relic hunters have, from time to time, recovered ramrods that were simply sticking out of the ground. It is believed that soldiers, during their time on the firing line, would stick their ramrod in the ground to save time during the loading process. Some ramrods were left behind this way and remained standing for decades. This Enfield bayonet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm, battlefield, or general relic collection.
