Braided Chain with Loops and Hanger - 1968 Culpeper, VA Confederate Camp Recovery

SOLD

This very interesting and unusual relic may be a one-of-a-kind item measuring approximately 6-1/2 inches in overall length. It consists of a braided chain approximately 1 x 3-1/4 inches with 3 loops at one end and a knapsack hook at the other. It has dusty green-brown patina and is good solid condition. Recovered in 1968 from a Confederate camp in Culpeper, VA, the digger believed it to be a sword hanger and perhaps it was, but to date, I have not found any photographic evidence to support this. Soldiers were indeed quite inventive when in need of a particular device and this one clearly appears field made. Whatever the case, it is definitely a cool relic. It was acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded this relic's month, year and location of recovery. The digger's label will be included. This excavated device will be an excellent addition to any Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
