Comments: This half shell has been in Peter George’s personal collection since for about 35 years. Mr. George, co-authored "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" and is one of the leading experts on artillery of the American Civil War. Peter observed two interesting features visible in the cross-section. The first being that of the cutaway of the sabot showing notches on its submerged edge, which were added by using a chisel after the sabot was manufactured. The purpose of the notches was to help lock the ring sabot firmly in place in the base of the shell. The other was that the case shot balls are irregularly shaped instead the usual spherical shape. This was likely the result of shell impact into hard soil which forced the balls to be compacted rendering them out of round. This half shell will not only be an excellent display piece and educational tool, but will also be a fine addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
