Item: US 3.67 inch "Bottlenose" Parrott Bolt
Construction: Solid cast iron, Army type Parrott brass ring sabot (missing).
Approximate size: Weight: 19 pounds. Diameter: 3.63 inches. Length: 8 5/8 inches.
Condition: Very good, fired, excavated. Missing brass ring sabot but otherwise complete. The minimally pitted iron is stable and was clear coated at some point for preservation.
Recovered: Unknown, but according to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", it was most likely from an Atlanta campaign site.
Comments: According to the above mentioned reference book, a "bolt" refers "to a cylindrical solid shot for use in a Rifled cannon". Since these bolts were mainly intended for battering structures and enemy cannon, the nose of these bolts were made smaller, and chilled to harden, so as to have a greater force upon impact. This fine Parrott bolt will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
