Confederate .40 Caliber LeMat Revolver Bullet - Identification Error

SOLD

Item: Confederate .40 Caliber LeMat Revolver Bullet - Identification Error (see Comments below)
Condition: Very good, excavated, unfired. Smooth waxy surface with grey-brown patina. One side of the bullet is marked with the numeral "90" in black ink (see Comments below).
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: .398 inch diameter, .605 inch length, 152.2 grains weight.
Reference: A similar example can be found in the following Civil War bullet reference book:

  • "Round Ball to Rimfire, Part Three" by Dean S. Thomas, on pages 179 & 180, #79.

See scans of the above pages in the additional images.

Comments: This example is from a very old bullet collection. The digger/collector identified and numbered each bullet with its corresponding McKee & Mason bullet reference number. However, in this case the digger/collector misidentified the bullet as M&M #90, for use in a Tranter revolver. Further research indicates that it is for a .40 caliber LeMat Revolver. This Confederate bullet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.

The above description, along with an image of this particular relic, will be printed on Virginia Relics letterhead and will also be included.
