Federal picket pins were used in the field to secure horses when at rest. This excavated example is constructed of wrought iron and measures approximately 13-1/8 inches in length and weighs a little over one pound. Its surface was clear coated at some point so as to stabilize the iron. It is in overall good condition but is missing its ring. Examples of similar picket pins are found in the following Civil War relic reference books:
