Pre-Civil War Shako Hat Star Pin

SOLD

This excavated pre-Civil War shako hat star pin once likely adorned a shako hat similar to the example shown in the additional images. Not only ornamental, but may have held an aiguilette that was draped from an attached hook. This pin was acquired directly from the digger who relic hunted central and northern Virginia areas. The device has a dark patina and may be constructed of thin sheet silver or brass. It has a bend where there is an approximate 12mm crack/break that was strengthened with white epoxy by the digger. It measures approximately 1-1/8 inches in diameter though this measurement varies due to the bend.

Similar examples are pictured in:

  • "American Military Headgear Insignia" by J. Duncan Campbell and Michael J. O'Donnell on page 81.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 112, item 7.
  • "Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch on page 162, item 5. (Crouch may have it mis-identified)

See above pages in the additional images.

This shako star pin will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
