Design: Virginia coat of arms on a plain field, with the figures of Virtus with "sword-up" in her right hand and a spear in her left, with its base resting on the Tyranny's crown. Encircling the figures is the Virginia state motto "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" or "Thus ever to tyrants". A small size ball is on the spear shaft above Virtus' hand, and her coat has five buttons on the left side. The tip of the spear rests on the rim of Tyranny's crown. 
Construction: Low convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated, secure shank present. Very pleasing bronze patina with a well-defined Virginia state seal. No cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.

Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, this button was "made around 1820-1835."  This Virginia militia button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
