Providence Tool Company Cavalry Saber & Scabbard

This saber and scabbard is in excellent condition, is dated 1862, and is so marked. Issued to Federal horsemen during the American Civil War, it is the Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber and was one of 10,434 produced by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island under the U.S. government Ordnance Department contract of February 1862. Of that amount produced, only 5,000 were stamped with the 1862 date, and this is one of those. Providence Tool Company sabers are much sought after and, to find one in this condition, is a rarity. The guard, grip, and blade are all firmly attached to each other and exhibit no play whatsoever. The brass has a dull yellowed brassy patina. Its blade length measures approximately 34-3/4 inches, with a 27-1/2 inch fuller. Its curved blade has a pleasing light grey sheen which has been maintained in excellent condition with little discoloration, no rust, or nicks. Just below the buff leather washer, marked very clearly on the ricasso is “U.S. / R.P.B. / 1862 ” with “ PROV. / TOOL / CO.” clearly stamped on the reverse ricasso. The abbreviation “PROV” has a backward slant. Stamped on the underside of the brass guard is the number "39". Its brass two branch guard and knucklebow is in good shape with no unusual bending. Its domed brass pommel cap is present and has no inspector markings. The center-swell handle grips have the black leather wrap cover that is in excellent condition and is tightly wrapped by its original double twist brass wire. The original matching steel scabbard has acquired a very pleasing mottled grey patina. There is very minor denting on both sides primarily in the lower half. There is one minor outer edge nick approximately halfway down. The two ring bands are present and firmly affixed. Both suspend twin rings measuring approximately 1-1/4 inch (outer diameter). Both rings exhibit wear indicative of this rig being belted and worn by the soldier. The scabbard retains its throat collar and exhibits a brazed seam along the bottom length where the metal was folded and joined. This fine Providence Tool Company saber and scabbard will be an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapon or general relic collection.
