Item: Rare Federal Bridle Bit Boss Insignia - Company E 2nd Cavalry
Construction: Cast brass.
Design: Raised letters and number "E 2C" on a stippled background encircled within a raised rim with plain attachment tabs.
Use: Insignia device attached to a Federal Cavalry bit. A similar example showing its use, but with a "US" bit boss instead, is included in the additional images.
Condition:
Very good, excavated. Rich brown patina with yellow soil remnants in the stippled dimples. Both tabs are in good shape. No cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Approximate size: 1-1/4 x 2-1/8 inches.
Recovered: Unknown
Reference:
Similar bit bosses can be found in the following reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 65.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 130.

See above pages in additional images.

Comments: Over the decades this numbered and lettered bit boss is only the second one I have come across, they are indeed a difficult relic to recover. It was acquired directly from the family of the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War insignia, cavalry or general relic collection.
