Reconstructed 9-Inch Mortar Shell with US Naval Fuze Dated 1862

Item: Reconstructed 9-Inch Mortar Shell Fragments with US Naval Fuze Dated 1862
Gun: 9-inch Dahlgren gun.
Construction: Cast iron.
Fuzing: Brass Navy watercap.
Approximate size: Weight: 29.8 pounds; Diameter: 8-9 inches (size varies due to reconstruction).
Condition: Excavated and reconstructed. The fragments were treated with electrolysis and reassembled using a very strong epoxy. The brass fuze is present and has a nice green patina, is in good shape and visibly stamped "ORD (ANCHOR) 1862". Its watercap is missing.
Recovered: Spring of 2013 from Malvern Hill, VA. (see digger's display card in additional images)

Comments: These 9-inch mortar fragments were recovered by Glenn Trimmer from private property with written permission. According to his display card regarding the shell fragments and fuze recovery, Glenn surmised that the shell was fired from a Federal gun boat on the James River.  Because the card contains a precise recovery location, some information has been redacted. This reconstructed mortar ball will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
