Stafford County, VA - Relic Display - Trimmer Collection - Bayonet Stabbed Buckle

SOLD

The relics in this display were recovered on two separate relic hunts approximately 5 months apart in the same area of Potomac Creek, in Stafford County, VA by Glenn Trimmer. The relics and their recovery are documented on three pages in Glenn's second journal and are included in the additional images.

According to the Glenn's second journal, the following relics were recovered on May 24, 1998:

  • 1 US belt buckle with multiple triangular holes
  • 3 .58 caliber Minie Balls
  • 1 melted Minie ball

and the following were recovered on November 1, 1998:

  • 5 .69 caliber round balls
  • 1 Small caliber round ball
  • 8 .58 caliber three-ringers
  • 1 .54 caliber three-ringer
  • 6 Standard Union Eagle uniform buttons
  • 1 Knapsack hook
  • 1 Brass eyelet
  • 1 Broken knife blade (standard eating utensil type and not included in display due to size)

Regarding the US buckle Glenn notes in his journal that "a soldier had repeatedly stabbed the buckle with his bayonet" as there are small triangular holes from the bayonet's tip visible on both front and rear. The buckle is in fair condition, with a dark taupe patina and is missing the single attachment tongue. As evidenced by his journal images, he was clearly excited to find the buckle!

Over the decades of relic hunting, Glenn maintained two journals, listing and often describing in detail, information regarding the relic's recovery. Three of his journal pages regarding these relics and their recovery are included in the additional images with names, maps and other sensitive information detailing exact recovery locations, removed for privacy reasons, however, the purchaser will receive complete copies of these three original documents which will include all of the information. Read more about Glenn Trimmer and his relic hunting by clicking this link: Glenn Trimmer Collection.

The wood and glass display case with locking hardware measures approximately 8-7/8 x 6 x 2-1/8 inches and weighs approximately 3 pounds. The relics are mounted in place by the pressure of the glass against the relics and blue felt on a foam backing. One of the eagle buttons and the melted Minie ball are also secured in place with a small piece of putty. A key to the display lock will be included. This display was acquired directly from Glenn's family and will be an excellent addition to any office, den, or family room.
