Saber Bayonet Scabbard Tip

SOLD

This excavated saber bayonet scabbard tip was acquired directly from the Virginia digger who recovered it from the Quantico, VA area along the Potomac River. The tip is constructed of brass and is in good condition. There are a couple of small holes in the bottom cap but the device is in otherwise solid shape. It measures 5/16 x 1-1/8 at its opening and is 3-3/4 inches long. Similar, but not exact examples of saber bayonet scabbard tips can be found in the following reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 75.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillip, page 165.

See scans of the above pages in the additional images.

Also, included is a scanned image of the digger (on left), with his hunting buddies and their detectors dating to the 1970-80s. This scabbard tip will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War edged weapon, battlefield, campsite, or general relic collection.
