Schenkl Combination Fuze - Early Pattern

SOLD

This excavated early pattern Schenkl combination fuze, constructed primarily from white-metal, is in good condition. Its rotator cap is present with the date of “1862” as well as the initials “J. P.”, of J. P. SCHENKL, still faintly visible. Several of the hash-marks as well as the number “1” are visible on the top flange. It appears that this fuze was lightly clear coated many years ago so as to protect the metal. According to Charles H. Jones' book "Artillery Fuses of the Civil War", on page 103, "On July 15, 1862, J. P. Schenkl patented his "[combination] Time and Concussion" fuse, Patent No.35,897. Also according to Jones, the patent model was actually constructed of brass while the actual production model was manufactured in white-metal. The Schenkl combination fuze offered here will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
