Sewing Equipment

This group of excavated sewing implements includes a sewing machine/button holder, parts of a "sewing bird", and two thimbles. The button holder was recovered from a Federal position on north side of Totopotomoy Creek, VA and the "sewing bird" parts from Jericho Mill, VA. According to the digger's information on this item's inventory index card:

"Miniture sewing machine. Iron, scissor-like device with adjustable brass scale (one inch) attached to knarled screw device on one jaw, and blade device on other jaw with 2 screws. Part of manufacture patent date (_7, 1852) still visible (should be July 27, 1852) (also, should have “B. D. Walcott’s Patent”- on same side and Walcott Brothers Manfrs, Boston on other side around pivot screw. Dug 1968 on north bank of Topotomoy Creek, near Studley, VA. Found near tin cup & fired 3 ringer.” Please note: Any visible patent information is very difficult to see and is believed to be located in in a circular fashion around the axis point of the device.

“Part of brass “Sewing Bird”, a device used on the end of a sewing table to hold cloth. This part is believed to be the upper section which held the “bird” and pin cushion. “Patented Nov. 8th 1857” stamped on inside. Decorative outside, appears to be gold gilt. Dug 11/89 in U.S. camp Jericho Mill”

Included in the additional images of these relics is an image of the digger's index card indicating, in most cases, the relic's identification, assessment of condition, recovery date & location, and other general information. In cases where there are discrepancies between the digger's description and Virginia Relic's description, Virginia Relic's description shall be deemed correct. These relics were acquired directly from the immediate family of the now deceased digger who hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia and adjacent states for several decades. The display case will be included. These sewing implements will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
