Approximate size:
 6-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches. 1-3/4 inch wall thickness.  Weight 14.8 pounds.
Condition:
Excellent, excavated. The iron is stable and may have been very lightly clear coated years ago. No repairs.
Recovered: Petersburg, VA area.
Reference: "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance"  by Jack Bell on page 55 (a complete example, but with a seacoast fuze instead of a wood drive-in fuze). A scan of this page is included in the additional images of this fragment.
Comments:
A .58 caliber 3-ring bullet has been pictured with the fragment as a size comparison. The fuse hole is visible on this fragment which accepted a wood drive-in fuze. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", all Civil War period mortar shells used a wood drive-in fuse adaptor with the exception of the "seacoast" mortar shell, which used a brass drive in adaptor. The shell interior would have housed gun powder. This huge shell fragment will display very nicely in any office, den, or by a fireplace, in addition to being an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
