Item: Heavy Artillery Spherical Shell Fragment - Fuze Threads
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 7.4 pounds; length & width: 6-1/2 x 4-7/8 inches; 1-5/8 inch wall thickness.
Condition: Solid, excavated. It appears that he iron was treated with electrolysis at some point and is stable with no loose surface areas. Fuze threads are clearly visible.
Recovered: Richmond, VA area.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", this heavy, thick section is from a 10 inch US navy watercap fuzed common shell likely fired from a Monitor class ironclad in the James River. It is clean and will display nicely in any office, den, or family room and will also be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
