Excavated Miniature Iron Axe

This excavated miniature iron axe is an unusual relic and unfortunately in two pieces. It is approximately 3-1/4 inches in length with a 1-1/4-inch-wide axe head. A couple of the reference books below picture and describe brass examples as "pioneer corps insignia". The iron is rusty with minor flaking, otherwise it is in stable condition. Recovery location unknown.

Additional miniature axes are found in the following relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 94, items 6&7.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on pages 142 (item 6), 148 (item 17), 156&157 (item 12).
  • "Civil War Artifacts of the Western Campaigns" by Charles S. Harris, page 212.

See above pages in additional images.

This interesting miniature axe will include a glass top display case and will be an excellent addition to any excavated general relic collection.
