This large post-Civil War "smokehouse" padlock was recovered by the late E. V. Smith, a lifelong central Virginia relic hunter. The lock earned its name because they were widely used in the 1800's to secure smokehouses where meat was cured. The heavy-duty brass keyhole cover is stamped "M.W & Co." which is the mark of Mallory, Wheeler & Company which was a lock and hardware manufacturer based in New Haven, Connecticut that began operations in 1834. The lock is in good solid condition with a small hole on one side. Its shackle and keyhole cover are frozen in place. It measures approximately 2-7/8 x 4-3/8 x 7/8 inches.
