Item: South Carolina Belt Buckle - Very Rare - Published
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "SC". Rear with solder fill and stud ("puppy paw") type belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The brass face of this buckle has a very pleasing brown patina, basically left uncleaned with areas of green and remaining yellow soil. There are two nearly unnoticeable hairline fractures, one running from the edge of the letter "S" to the rim at the ten o'clock position and the other running from the edge of the letter "C" to the rim at the one o'clock position. The rim has nicks and slight bending primarily at the "S" end. The rear has a pebbled surface with most all of its solder present. All three belt attachment hooks are present with the top of one stud post missing its cap. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Chesterfield County, VA
NOTE: The recovery of this buckle was noteworthy enough to be included in the North South Trader's Civil War Volume 41, Number 1 under "Field Recoveries", page 10. An image of this page is included in the additional images.
Approximate size: 56 x 88 mm. (rarer large size).

Comments: Dedicated Civil War relic hunters will often spend half of their life in woods and fields looking for that elusive rare relic. Unfortunately, most relic hunters will never see it, but every now and then, a once in a lifetime relic is found and this is one of those times. Don't miss this opportunity to put this buckle in your collection as it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
