Item: U.S. Militia Waist Belt Plate ca. 1850-1875 - The Buckle in "American Military Belt Plates"
Construction: Gilt cast brass plate with tongue disc cast separately. Benchmarked No. 20.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated. Its brass has a pleasing toned brass patina. Both belt keepers are present with one slightly bent. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Approximate size: 50 x 82 mm.
Reference: This is the actual belt plate pictured in the following reference book:

  • "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, on page 208, plate 314.

Comments: Rarely are relics offered that are the examples pictured and described in a reference book and here is an opportunity to add one to your collection. Both tongue and wreath are stamped with the matching benchmark number "20". This example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle or general relic collection.
