US Base "Fired" .58 Caliber Bullet

SOLD

This excavated .58 caliber bullet with the raised letters "US" stamped in the base is in fired condition and was recovered in the area of Chancellorsville, VA. The majority of the "US" base bullets recovered are actually in dropped or unfired condition and it is rare occurrence to find a fired example. The "US" stamp is strong and the bullet has an overall waxy tan patina. Rifling marks are visible on the bullet's exterior and the skirt retains its round shape while the nose is blunt from impact. According to “Round Ball to Rimfire, Part I” by Dean S. Thomas, referring to both “star” and “US” base bullets:  “It was hoped when this project was begun that some concrete information would be located about them, but regrettably, it was not. All we do know is that these .58’s were made by machine, probably at one of the Federal arsenals. An engraved die-punch formed the raised star or letters “US” in a truncated cone cavity during the pressing operation. It is very probable that both varieties were produced by the same manufacturer because the scarcer “US”-in-the-base is almost always encountered where the “star”-in-the-base bullets are found.” This fired US base .58 caliber bullet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection. Approximately .57 x .87 inch. Ref. M&M 342, T&T 152, RBTR Pt. I 201.
