US Belt Buckle - High Quality

SOLD

Item: Excavated US Belt Buckle - High Quality
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised large letters "US". Rear with solder fill and arrow type attachment hooks.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass front is smoother than the initial high resolution image indicates. It has a very pleasing even rich brown patina and is basically flawless with the exception of surface minor dings. The rim has the typical tan residue, a result of the chemical reaction of the brass edge meeting the solder combined with other elements. I find that this residue around the rim will often nicely highlight the face of plates, this being one of those cases. Also on the front, situated in-between and just under the "US", are what are believed to be the letters "AM" lightly scratched into the surface. I am uncertain if these letters were intentionally etched there, possibly representing initials of its owner, or perhaps they are simply accidental scratches that appear to be letters. Whichever the case, it's an interesting feature. The rear has a near complete complement of solder which is smooth. There are three areas of very minor surface flaking, however these areas now appear stable. All three belt attachment hooks are present and the plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Fredericksburg, VA area.
Approximate size:  56 x 87 mm.
Comments:  This high quality belt plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
