Item: US Waist Belt Buckle - Arrow Type Hooks
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and brass arrow belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a yellowish-plumb patina. The surface coloring is a result of a very light layer of encrusted yellow soil. The rim is nearly complete with a very small section missing and only visible from the side and rear views. Rear solder is present with some pebbling and minimal surface flaking. All three hooks are present and secure. It appears that, in addition to soil, small sections of the leather waist belt remain lodged directly under both arrow hooks. There is definitely soil under the single hook, but it is uncertain as to whether there is a leather remnant. There are no cracks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Culpeper County, VA.
Approximate size: 55 x 87 mm.
Reference: An example with the same tall "US" letters is found in the following Civil War belt plate reference book:

Comments: This buckle will be an excellent addition to any Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
