Item: US Belt Buckle - Personalized with Carved Initials & Company
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and arrow type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a rich brown patina with both rim and thin letters "US" nicely highlighted by the tan colored residue. There is a subtle wave along the lower edge of the plate. The rim is fully intact with only a minor dent just above the upper right serif of the letter "S". The rear solder is complete except for the area adjacent to the dent. The belt attachment hooks are present. Carved into the solder are the initials "H W" with a series of "X"s below and what appears to be an additional "X" situated between the two initials. Further below is "Co E". While there appears to be the number "18" (regiment?) to the right of the letter "E", I cannot be certain that it is actually a carving as the "8" appears raised. The plate has no cracks, breaks or repairs.
Recovered: Fort Meikle area of Petersburg, VA.
Approximate size: 54 x 86 mm.
Comments: What I appreciate most about the buckle carving is the attention to detail, especially the small row of "X"s and the hash marks within the letters. This personalized US waist belt buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
