Item: US Belt Waist Buckle - Flat Bottom "U" - 15th Mass. Infantry - High Quality
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and stud type belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass front has a chocolate brown patina with a light layer of scattered tan soil. The rim is fully intact, in good shape, with no issues. The rear has a complete complement of solder and all three attachment hooks. Secured behind the two stud hooks is a small section of the original leather belt. There are no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.

Approximate size: 57 x 88 mm.

Comments: This lettering style is seldom encountered and according to O'Donnell and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates" reference book, US plates with the flat bottom "U", due to their recovery location where Massachusetts troops have been present, have been positively associated with 15th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. This high-quality buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
